African Union (AU)

Formed in the 1990s and launched in 2002, the African Union (AU) is a committee devoted to representing the needs of African peoples. Consisting of 54 member states, the AU has been dedicated to protecting the basic human rights of African citizens, and upholding democratic principles. Common pursuits of the African Union include developing continental treaties, improving access to education, promoting intercontinental trade relationships, and protecting women’s rights. To achieve its objectives, the AU possesses a military force named the African Standby Force (ASF) that serves as a multidisciplinary peacekeeping unit throughout the African continent. The AU has the jurisdiction to act on any issues that concern the human rights of African peoples. With Africa experiencing rapid development in recent years, the AU provides an important forum to facilitate discussion on how to manage this growth.

The AU is a regional body and is open to delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are not mandatory, but highly recommended. However, to be considered for an award, delegates must submit one by 11:59PM PST on November 25, 2023, or November 17, 2023 for feedback from the dais team. Please read about Horizons’ Position Paper policy, which can be found below. Questions, inquiries, and position papers for this committee can be emailed to horizons-au@cahsmun.org.

Mia Rafii | Director
A junior at Crofton House School, Mia is honoured to serve as the Director of the African Union at Horizons 2023. Ever since her first Model UN conference in an overwhelmingly large General Assembly, Mia has developed a passion for the lively debate and valuable collaboration that MUN fosters. Outside of the committee room, Mia considers herself a connoisseur of all things cheesecake and can be found taking naps in obscure locations. Mia's favourite activities include cuddling her cat, playing wildly competitive spike ball, and sleeping in past noon. Mia is confident that Horizons 2023 will be an unforgettable conference and looks forward to a weekend of fierce debate!

Eric Tao | Chair

Currently in grade 11 at Fraser Heights Secondary School, Eric is extremely excited to serve as the Chair for the African Union at Horizons 2023. Even though his first MUN experience was spent with immense dread and anxiety, the amazing people and fast-paced action quickly won him over. When he is not caught up in MUN, he can be found in the kitchen whipping up a dish, sweating on a badminton court, or going down rabbit holes on the internet for hours at a time. Eric hopes the experience at CAHSMUN Horizons will be a fulfilling and exceptional experience!

Elise Liu | Chair

Currently in her senior year at Southpointe Academy, Elise is delighted to be serving as the Chair of the African Union for Horizons 2023. Ever since stepping into her first conference two years ago as a shy and timid delegate, Model UN has since allowed her to broaden her perspectives on cross-cultural insights and global affairs while creating life-long memories. Outside the world of MUN, she can be found exploring book stores for an infinite amount of time until others drag her out, falling down the rabbit hole of science videos on YouTube, or capturing moments with her camera. Elise hopes that all delegates will have an incredibly enriching and memorable weekend, and looks forward to meeting everyone at Horizons 2023!
