Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)

Announced in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an infrastructure investment programme initiated by the People’s Republic of China. Entering its tenth year, the initiative is founded on the principles of extensive cooperation and mutual benefits modelled after the ancient Silk Road. It aims to reduce the global infrastructure disparity between developed and developing countries, driving China economically towards becoming an economic powerhouse by 2049. Since its establishment, the BRI has attracted 155 member states over the world with over 75% of the world’s population potentially receiving benefits from more than 3,000 infrastructure projects proposed under the BRI’s name. With controversial actions from the Chinese government in recent years, the BRI’s future is fraught with uncertainty.

The BRI is a regional body and is open to delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are not mandatory, but highly recommended. However, to be considered for an award, delegates must submit one by 11:59PM PST on November 25, 2023, or November 17, 2023 for feedback from the dais team. Please read about Horizons’ Position Paper policy, which can be found below. Questions, inquiries, and position papers for this committee can be emailed to horizons-bri@cahsmun.org.

Kevin Xu | Director
As a junior at Richmond Christian School, Kevin is ecstatic to serve as the Director of BRI for CAHSMUN Horizons 2023. Ever since his first stuttering speech at Horizons 2021, MUN has nourished his extreme passion for political discussions and debates. This non-spectator sport has allowed him to witness and participate in the collision and reaction of diverse opinions from different cultures, races, and backgrounds, and, most importantly, building some lifelong friendships. Outside the conference rooms, Kevin can be caught getting bubble tea after two hours of intense CHUNITHM playing, waking up reluctantly for badminton training, or being addicted to the adorable beings found in cat cafés. Kevin looks forward to meeting every delegate and making this conference weekend an unforgettable memory.

Jessie Shi | Chair

Currently a junior at West Vancouver Secondary School in the International Baccalaureate program, Jessie is elated to serve as the Chair of the Belt and Road Initiative Committee at CAHSMUN Horizons 2023. Ever since she initially navigated Horizons as a ninth grader, the bold negotiations between diverse viewpoints and open mindedness of successful diplomacy in the intricate realm of Model UN have ignited a new passion in her. Now, Jessie plans to recreate the gratifying experiences for every delegate. In her free time, she loves to explore a variety of food restaurants, play badminton, and listen to music. Jessie cannot wait for everyone to broaden their horizons at an unforgettable weekend of fervent debates!
