Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN)

The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) was established in 1945 and is one of the six General Assemblies. Consisting of 193 members, ECOFIN has been dedicated to dealing with global economic matters. The primary goal of the committee is to ensure international financial stability and promote sustainable economic growth in developing and developed countries alike. The committee’s mandate has involved them in issues such as poverty, food security, and product management, continuing to discuss issues relating to reliable goods and services across the globe. Regardless of a nation’s economic circumstances, the committee provides an important platform to discuss economic issues.

ECOFIN offers the traditional Model United Nations experience for delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are not mandatory, but highly recommended. However, to be considered for an award, delegates must submit one by 11:59PM PST on November 25, 2023, or November 17, 2023 for feedback from the dais team. Please read about Horizons’ Position Paper policy, which can be found below. Questions, inquiries, and position papers for this committee can be emailed to horizons-ecofin@cahsmun.org.

Siena McCleery | Director
In her junior year at Crofton House School, Siena is ecstatic to be serving as Director of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council at this year’s iteration of Horizons. Despite Siena beginning her MUN journey three years ago as a timid and unsure delegate, she has grown to love this non-spectator sport. From researching a country’s policy to engaging in debate with other delegates, MUN has truly played an essential role in her high school experience, providing her with opportunities to pursue a passion for global affairs while forming lifelong friendships. When not raising a placard, Siena can be found perusing the aisles of a bookstore, going on hikes, or purchasing a concerning amount of bubble tea. Siena is looking forward to meeting all delegates and wishes them the best of luck in their preparation for Horizons 2023.

Mary Lu | Chair
A Grade 10 student attending Rockridge Secondary, Mary is honored to serve as the Chair of ECOFIN at CAHSMUN Horizons 2023. Mary began her Model UN journey in Grade 9 at the insistence of her upperclassmen, and discovered her passion and interest in public speaking and diplomacy through her shaky first speech. Since then, she has been involving herself with the exhilarating MUN world as much as possible. Outside of MUN, Mary can be found rereading her favorite 551-chapter web novel, playing video games until dawn, practicing the violin, and agonizing over math. Mary is excited to meet everyone and looks forward to a weekend of productive committee sessions!

Daniel Koo | Chair
A senior at Magee Secondary School, Daniel is thrilled to hold the position of Chair in the Economic and Financial Affairs Council at Horizons 2023. At his first conference in Grade 8 where he witnessed lively and professional debate between experienced delegates, Daniel discovered his profound passion in debate and global politics. As Daniel continued to explore many more issues ranging from healthcare to cashless societies, not only has he intensified his interests in global explorations, but also crafted long-lasting friendships, valuable lessons, and unforgettable memories. Outside of Model UN, Daniel can be found playing soccer, golf, badminton, teaching himself Mandarin, and playing strategic boardgames with his friends. Daniel is eager to meet all delegates and is excited for another weekend of debate!
