UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL (UNSC)

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was established in January 1946 as a specialised body of the United Nations (UN). The UNSC prioritises promoting and maintaining global stability. Under this focus, the UNSC are involved in maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, cooperating in solving international problems, and promoting respect for human rights. All resolutions passed by the UNSC are binding to all United Nations member states as stated under Article 25 of the UN charter. While other branches of the UN make recommendations to member states, the UNSC has the power to compel member states to follow UNSC resolutions.

The UNSC is a specialized agency and is highly recommended for more advanced delegates looking for a challenging and new Model UN experience. Position papers are not mandatory, but highly recommended. However, to be considered for an award, delegates must submit one by 11:59PM PST on November 25, 2023, or November 17, 2023 for feedback from the dais team. Please read about Horizons’ Position Paper policy, which can be found below. Questions, inquiries, and position papers for this committee can be emailed to horizons-unsc@cahsmun.org.

Caleb Jang | Director
Caleb Jang is a rising Senior at Stratford Hall IB School and is ecstatic to be serving as your director for UNSC at Horizons 2023! Ever since discovering Model UN as a shy eighth grader, Caleb’s passion for global affairs and diplomacy has blossomed. During these five years in Model UN, Caleb has created memories and friendships that he will cherish for a lifetime. From 2 am crisis committees to countless Starbucks runs, Model UN has found a special place in Caleb’s heart. Outside of the conference room, Caleb can be found driving around Vancouver to catch sunsets and stargaze, biking along the seawall with friends, searching for new restaurants in Vancouver, or walking his dog. Caleb is excited to meet the delegates and hopes to create an unforgettable experience.

Jade Han | Chair
Entering her junior year at Collingwood School, Jade is honoured to serve as the Chair of UNSC at CAHSMUN Horizons 2023. From failing to gather enough confidence to raise her placard to speak at her first conference to writing, co-writing, and sending dozens of directives the following year, Jade has become fascinated by the critical thinking, collaboration, and negotiation present within Model United Nations. Over these past few years, she has collected countless memories from conferences and made friends from all over the lower mainland and abroad. Outside of MUN, Jade can be found borrowing history books from every library she crosses paths with, scaring her dog with her questionable ball-throwing skills, and attempting to convince her friends that cake for breakfast is a bad idea. Jade wishes all delegates the best of luck and looks forward to a memorable CAHSMUN Horizons 2023!"
